Wind region map of Australia: what wind region am I in?

Australia's wind region map, in AS/NZS 1170.2, puts every address in region A, B, C or D: region A across most of the country, region B in the bands between it and the cyclonic coast, and the cyclonic regions C and D along the northern coast. Type the address, in Brisbane, Perth, Darwin or a country town, and its region shows here. The site's own wind rating, its wind classification, also depends on the terrain, the shielding and the slope at the site, and is the paid reading in the site exposure checker.

What is a wind region?

Australia’s wind loading standard divides the country into regions on a national map, from A across most of the south and inland through to D on the cyclone coast of the north. The region is the starting point for how strongly a house, shed, carport or patio has to be built and tied down. It comes from where the lot sits on the map, and nothing about the block changes it.

Is a wind region the same as a wind rating?

No. The region comes from the map. The wind rating, often called the wind classification, goes further and takes in the lot itself: how exposed the block is, the slope of the ground, the shape of the hills around it and the height of the building. Two lots in the same region can have different ratings, and kit suppliers and certifiers usually ask for the rating.

Who asks for it?

Shed, carport and patio suppliers need it to quote the right kit, and certifiers check it against the design. A wind zone or wind classification on a quote should match the address it was quoted for.
